The Pieces of My Heart You Took With You: Remembering Banku 🌾🐏

~ "A crown of wool, a heart of gold... \ ^ / some bonds are never truly sold."

There is a distinct kind of heartbreak that comes with letting go of an animal you raised from its very first steps. It isn't like the closure of a final farewell under the night sky of a sacrifice; it is a lingering, haunting question mark. You watch a truck drive away, catching one last glimpse of a pair of familiar eyes through the slats, and you leave a piece of your soul right there on the asphalt.

It has been a year since I sold Banku, my spectacular Marino. Yet, every time a cool breeze sweeps through the pens, or I hear the gentle rustle of a feed bag, I still look around, half-expecting to see his dense, cloud-like fleece moving toward me.

From a Fragile Cloud to Pure Majesty: Banku’s Features

When Banku first arrived, he was a delicate, trembling little thing—a small, fluffy patch of cream-colored wool tucked safely inside the shelter of the indoor pen. He wore a simple, slender purple collar around his neck back then, a tiny splash of color against his immaculate, pristine white face. Even as a lamb, his pink nose and clear, soul-searching eyes gave him an air of complete innocence.

But as the months rolled on, Banku underwent an astonishing transformation. He grew into a magnificent, heavyweight Marino ram. His fleece became a thick, incredibly dense, and luxurious coat of premium wool that crinkled beautifully with every step he took. He developed a heavy, powerful chest and a broad, noble head. By the time he walked out into the open alleyways, he didn't just walk—he marched with an absolute, commanding presence. He had transitioned from a fragile cloud into a force of nature.

A Gentle Spirit with a Playing Heart: His Mannerisms

Despite his imposing size and the sheer density of his frame, Banku remained a baby at heart. He possessed a beautiful, playful temperament that was impossible not to fall in love with.

He had a distinct way of letting you know he wanted attention. Banku wouldn't bleat loudly or throw tantrums. Instead, he would march right up to the edge of the wooden pallets, stomp his front hoof softly, and toss his head up, letting his long, velvety ears flap gracefully.

His favorite routine was the evening groom. The moment I brought out a heavy brush, his entire demeanor would change. He would stand completely still, lowering his heavy head, letting out a deep, contented sigh as if all the weight of the world had been lifted off his shoulders. He loved the bond of a shared moment, connecting with a quiet, unwavering loyalty.

The Dramatic Turn: The Day the Road Diverged

The decision to sell him didn't come easily. In fact, it tore at the very fabric of our daily routine. The fiction we tell ourselves when we part with our animals is that they will find a place just as loving, but the drama of that final afternoon felt heavy and real.

I remember the day clearly. We led Banku out of the dark, familiar shelter of his indoor pen into the bright, sun-drenched alleyway. We traded his soft purple lamb collar for a heavy, dark braided lead rope adorned with vibrant orange and red decorative pom-poms—the traditional marking of a premium ram ready for a new journey.

As we walked down the narrow street, the atmosphere was thick with unspoken emotion. The background noise of the neighborhood seemed to fade away, replaced only by the steady, rhythmic clack-clack of his hooves on the dirt road. Banku stopped mid-stride. He turned his broad, woolen head back toward the farm, his large eyes scanning the gates he had called home for so long. He gave a sharp nudge against my hand, a sudden, desperate plea of, "Why are we walking away?"

I had to steel my heart, fighting back tears as I handed his lead rope over to his new handlers. As the vehicle started to move, the word "GOODBYE" didn't just feel like a word; it felt like a heavy weight pressing down on my chest.

An Unforgettable Legacy

Banku, you were the pride of our pen. You showed us the sheer beauty of what a well-cared-for Marino could become. Though you now walk under a different sky, eat from a different trough, and belong to a different horizon, the love we poured into you remains right here.

You were sold, Banku, but you could never be replaced. Somewhere out there, I hope you are standing tall, tossing your head proudly, and knowing that you were deeply, truly loved.
