From the Ashes: Why I’m Not Giving Up on Raju, Our Little Phoenix
# From the Ashes: Why I’m Not Giving Up on Raju, Our Little Phoenix
They say you shouldn’t let your heart dictate your business, especially in farming. But sometimes, a soul enters your life that completely rewrites the rules. For me, that soul is a little goat named Raju.
Looking at him today, limping but still fighting, I wanted to put his story into words—partly to process the worry, and partly to honor the incredible spirit of this little survivor.
### A Beautiful, Costly Beginning
It all started back in December. A friend called me about a kid that had just become available. To say he was stunning is an understatement: a gorgeous, furry, snow-white, pink-skinned little guy. He carried elite genes, sired by a renowned Hansa breeder buck.
But his beauty came with a heavy, heartbreaking backstory. His mother, a high-quality Sojat Patira female, had tragically passed away during childbirth. His owner, Rajubhai Patil, had lovingly hand-raised the orphan for two months, bottle-feeding him around the clock.
Because of his lineage, the asking price was incredibly high for his age. As much as he tugged at my heartstrings, I told myself to be practical. *Don't melt your heart, and don't burn the cash,* I reasoned. I passed on him.
### The Rescue
A few days later, I found out he had been sold for ₹10,000 to Mohsinbhai. My heart sank. Mohsinbhai is a trader with a notorious reputation for neglecting animal feed and welfare in pursuit of quick profits. I couldn't sleep knowing that fragile, bottle-fed baby was in a place where he wouldn’t get the care he desperately needed.
The next day, I tracked him down, paid Mohsinbhai ₹11,000, and brought the kid home to my farm.
Instantly, he became the star of the farm. Suddenly, everyone wanted him. I had buyers offering me ₹13,500, then ₹15,000. But I didn't budge. He wasn't a commodity to me anymore; he was family. I named him **Raju**, after the original owner who had saved his life at birth.
### The Shadow of the Evil Eye
Perhaps it was all that unwanted attention, or what we call *buri nazar* (the evil eye), but heavy clouds soon gathered over Raju.
Not long after arriving, he fell dangerously ill. It started with severe pneumonia, followed quickly by a brutal bout of diarrhea. For a young, orphaned kid, this is usually a death sentence. Yet, Raju defied the odds. He fought like a tiny warrior, rising from the ashes of his illness like a phoenix.
Once he recovered, he was pure joy on four legs. He was always a happy chap—jumping around, running, and filling the entire farm with life.
> *“He kept rising from the ashes like a phoenix, proving that his will to live was stronger than any sickness.”*

### The Latest Battle
A month ago, during Bakri Eid, our farm was bustling with large, heavy bucks. In the chaos, it seems an older, angry goat or sheep heavily headbutted or knocked into Raju, striking his front leg and rib cage.
Since that day, our cheerful little boy has been limping, visibly burdened by pain and swelling. We have tried everything. Sprays, ointments, traditional oil massages, vet-prescribed injections—you name it, we’ve done it. Yet, the stubborn limp remains.
And yet... he still refuses to give up.
Even in pain, Raju is eating, drinking, and trying his absolute best to win against all odds. He looks at me with those bright eyes, hobbling forward just to be near us.
### Looking Forward with Hope
A lot of people in this business would tell me to cut my losses and sell him off. But my answer is a definitive **no**. Raju is not for sale, and he never will be. He fought for his life from the day he was born, and the least I can do is fight alongside him now.
I want nothing more than to see him fully recover. I close my eyes and picture it: Raju back to his old self, jumping around the yard, running behind me the moment I step onto the farm, licking my hand, and playing joyfully with my children.
Until that day comes, my fingers are tightly crossed, and my heart is full of prayers.
*Hang in there, my little phoenix
. We are rooting for you.*
