In a Cruel World, Animals Teach Us How to Stay Human

Raising Animals Made Me a Better Human Being

There is something deeply human about raising animals with love. Whether it is feeding hungry chicks before sunrise, watching ducks splash joyfully in water, caring for pigeons perched on a rooftop, or walking proudly beside goats and sheep during bakra season — these moments shape the heart in ways modern life often cannot.

For some people, bakrebazi is only a hobby. For others, it becomes a journey of emotion, responsibility, attachment, sacrifice, and spiritual reflection. The person who truly loves animals does not see them as “just livestock” or “pets.” He sees living creations of Allah — souls that depend upon human kindness, mercy, and care.

The Silent Teachers of Compassion

Animals teach us lessons without speaking a single word.

A lamb teaches innocence.
A pigeon teaches loyalty.
A duck teaches joy and companionship.
A goat teaches trust.
A shepherd teaches responsibility.

The one who feeds animals daily slowly becomes softer in speech, calmer in anger, and gentler in behavior. Caring for animals develops patience because they cannot explain their pain in words. It develops empathy because their suffering becomes visible only to those who truly observe. It develops humility because no matter how powerful a human becomes, he still bends down with his own hands to feed a helpless creature.

In today’s fast-paced world filled with stress, ego, competition, and loneliness, animals reconnect people with simplicity. A person may return home exhausted from work, burdened by worries, yet the sight of a happy duck flapping its wings or a goat recognizing its owner instantly melts the heaviness of the heart.

Many people discover that animals heal emotional wounds better than long conversations ever could.

Islam and Mercy Towards Animals

Islam does not separate spirituality from kindness toward creation. Mercy toward animals is considered mercy beloved to Allah Himself.

Our beloved Prophet Prophet Muhammad taught compassion not only for humans, but for every living being.

There is a famous Hadith about a woman who was punished because she imprisoned a cat without feeding it, while another narration speaks about a sinner forgiven by Allah simply because he gave water to a thirsty dog. These teachings show that in Islam, even small acts of mercy toward animals carry immense spiritual value.

The Holy Qur'an repeatedly reminds mankind to observe animals as signs of Allah’s wisdom and blessings. Livestock are described as sources of benefit, beauty, sustenance, and reflection. Allah mentions grazing cattle, sheep, camels, birds, and other creatures throughout the Qur’an to awaken gratitude and awareness in the human heart.

Islam teaches that animals are communities just like humans:

“There is no creature on earth or bird that flies with its wings except they are communities like you.”

This verse alone changes perspective. Animals are not lifeless objects created merely for human use. They are living nations created by Allah, each with purpose, emotion, and existence.

The Noble Tradition of Shepherds

One of the most beautiful realities in Islamic history is that many prophets were shepherds.

Prophet Musa tended flocks.
Prophet Dawud cared for livestock.
Even Prophet Muhammad himself worked as a shepherd in his early life.

There is profound wisdom in this.

A shepherd is not merely someone who walks behind animals. A shepherd protects the weak, searches for greener pastures, guides the lost, prevents danger, and ensures every member of the flock is safe and nourished. This responsibility builds leadership rooted in mercy rather than pride.

Perhaps this is why shepherding became preparation for prophethood itself — because the one who learns to guide animals gently can also guide humanity wisely.

The image of a shepherd leading sheep through dry land toward green meadows is deeply symbolic of life itself. Every human being searches for guidance, peace, sustenance, and hope. Just as animals trust the shepherd, believers trust Allah’s guidance through faith.

Bakrebazi — More Than a Tradition

In many homes and mohallas, bakrebazi is not just seasonal excitement. It becomes emotional attachment.

People spend months feeding goats by hand, grooming them, talking to them, walking them proudly through lanes, and treating them like family members. Children learn responsibility through feeding schedules. Elders pass down knowledge about breeds, care, and livestock traditions. Families bond over shared affection for animals.

These experiences cultivate emotional intelligence that no classroom can teach.

A child who learns to care for a weak chick often grows into an adult who respects the vulnerable.
A person who protects thirsty pigeons in summer understands mercy beyond words.
Someone who lovingly raises ducks, lambs, or goats learns that life is not about domination — it is about stewardship.

Animals Make Humans More Human

Modern society often measures success through money, status, or appearance. But animals quietly teach values that truly matter:

  • Kindness over cruelty

  • Patience over anger

  • Service over selfishness

  • Humility over arrogance

  • Responsibility over carelessness

The person who feeds animals before feeding himself develops gratitude. The one who wakes up early to clean coops, refill water bowls, or protect livestock from rain learns discipline and sacrifice.

Love for animals softens the soul.

And perhaps that softness is not weakness — perhaps it is exactly what Allah loves in a believer.

Because the strongest hearts are not the hardest ones.
The strongest hearts are the most merciful.

In a world becoming emotionally colder every day, maybe caring for Allah’s creatures is one of the purest ways left to remain truly human.
